In 1941, Dominick “Doe” Signa and his wife Mamie turned a small-town grocery store in Greenville, Mississippi, into what would become a Southern dining legend
Originally a family-run grocery established in 1903 by Doe’s father, the building was a hub for locals, enduring hard times like the devastating flood of 1927. During those years, Doe’s family found inventive ways to survive, including bootlegging, until they could return to their culinary roots.
The shift from groceries to hot tamales was a defining moment
Mamie had received a partial recipe for hot tamales, which she improved upon, soon selling them alongside other homemade favorites. These tamales became an instant hit, drawing in customers and sparking the beginnings of Doe’s Eat Place.
As the years passed, Doe’s transformed from a humble eatery to a celebrated steakhouse, renowned for its mouthwatering, oversized steaks cut in-house and designed to be shared family-style. From T-bones and porterhouses to tender ribeyes, Doe’s built a name on flavor, quality, and community values that continue to define each location today.
Through generations of family ownership and community support, Doe’s has grown into a Southern icon
Each dish carries forward the same commitment to taste and tradition that started it all. Whether it’s the famous tamales, the signature seasonings, or the legendary steaks, every meal at Doe’s is a tribute to the spirit and resilience that began in Greenville, MS, over 80 years ago.
